As a tropical storm brings rain to the Savannah area
today, folks who rent may not be worried about flood insurance. After all,
you’ve got renters insurance and your landlord has flood insurance so you’re
covered, right?  Well, probably not.
“In most cases a renter needs a flood policy as well,” says State
Farm Insurance agent Pat Parker.

Parker says renters insurance normally covers loss due to
things like a fire. It can also cover a “man made” water event such
as a burst water pipe. “But a flood due to a rain storm or hurricane is
not covered,” says Parker.

Parker says in most cases renters will need to buy a
separate flood policy through the national flood insurance program. He advises
that anyone who rents should make sure they understand what their renters
policy covers and what it does not.
