Group formed to help ease process of filing homeowner’s insurance claims
With hurricane season upon us, many homeowners are expressing concerns about the process of filing homeowners insurance claims.
Some say it can be a nightmare.
Today Florida Insurance Consumer Advocate Robin Westcott launched an effort to make some possible improvements to the process.
She’s formed a working group made up of representatives from consumer organizations and the insurance industry.
It’s hard to find a homeowner here on the gulf coast who doesn’t have a complaint about insurance companies.
Florida Insurance Consumer Advocate Robin Westcott recently got an earful of those complaints from folks here and throughout the state in a series of forums.
Many described long and frustrating claim filing processes that got in the way of their families’ ability to recover.
Wescott took action by forming a working group made up of representatives from consumer organizations and the insurance industry.
Nancy Shuebrook says her home along Bayou Grande was wiped out by Hurricane Ivan in 2004.
She says it took about a year of haggling with her insurance company to get the money to rebuild.
Reporter: What are some things you would like to see improve?
Nanvy Shuebrook, Homeowner: “It’s just time, the time that it took. And it’s all on you as a consumer.”
The group will discuss a variety of issues including the length of the claims process, mediation and appraisal, non-renewal of policies and more.
Westcott says consumers should not be “victimized” by poor claims handling or by those looking to exploit homeowners after a loss.
The working group is set to meet on July 17th and 18th.
